A young British tree you buy for yourself and grow while you are alive, with a record attached to it: photographs, heights, where it is planted, and notes about what you would like to happen to it.
It is the opposite arrangement to a memorial tree, which somebody else buys after you have died. Here the growing happens while you are still around to watch it.
Plenty of people write a will, choose a song, or tell somebody where the paperwork is. This is the same kind of thinking with something alive at the end of it.
Most people who buy one say the appeal is the growing rather than the ending.
By how much room you have and how long you want to wait. Birch and cherry do something visible within a few years. Oak and pine are slower and end up considerably larger.
The mature heights and the space each one needs are set out side by side, which is a faster way to decide than reading four pages.
Small. It is a young tree rather than a specimen, and the height at dispatch depends on the season and what the grower has ready. We confirm the size with you before it leaves.
The Heritage package starts with a larger, further-established tree.
UK mainland only. We do not deliver to Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly, the Outer Hebrides, Shetland, Orkney and Caithness, the Argyll islands, Arran or Cumbrae.
The postcode is checked before you pay, so nobody is charged for a delivery we cannot make. If you are in one of those places, write to us and we will tell you honestly whether anything can be arranged.
Dispatch is within ten working days. A living tree is lifted, checked and packed for one order rather than pulled off a shelf, which is slower than a warehouse.
Some sellers offer next-day delivery on a tree, and that is a real advantage of theirs. If you need one by a particular date, tell us before you order rather than after.
Every figure, including the ones where somebody else is cheaper.
The price of the tree, plus flat-rate delivery. Both are shown before you pay, and there is no charge added at the end that was not on the page.
The tree record, the certificate and the photographs are included and always will be for a tree already bought.
Nothing compulsory. DeathTree Care is an optional annual subscription for seasonal guidance and a yearly check-in, and choosing not to take it changes nothing about your tree or your record.
Your record does not disappear if you do not subscribe.
Yes. Several nurseries sell bare-root saplings of these species for a good deal less, and if the tree on its own is what you want, that is the better purchase and we would rather say so.
What you are paying the difference for here is the record and the framing around it. If you do not want those, you do not need us.
The practical side, once there is a tree in your hallway in a box.
For a few years, yes, and that is how most trees here start. A container is not a permanent home for a full-sized tree, so repotting and eventually planting out need planning.
Oak and pine will outgrow a pot sooner than you expect. Cherry and birch are more forgiving about it.
A pot on a balcony or a yard works for the first years, and some people plan from the start to hand the tree to somebody with ground for it.
What does not work is buying a tree with no idea where it will eventually go. Decide that before you order rather than after, because an oak with nowhere to be planted is a problem you are passing to somebody else.
Trees in pots move with you. A tree already in the ground usually does not, and moving an established tree rarely goes well.
That is worth thinking about before you plant it out, and it is why the record asks where the tree is.
Tell us what happened. The original chapter stays in the record and a replacement is added as a new one, so the story is not erased.
A replacement is quoted separately, because this is not unlimited cover. If a tree arrives in poor condition, contact us straight away and we will put it right. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
What it holds, who can see it, and what happens to it later.
A page for your tree that only you can add to: photographs over the years, heights, where it is planted, a name you choose, and private notes about what you would like to happen to it.
It is the part of this that is not a tree, and it is the part most people find they use.
You, and anybody you have shown. The private notes are private: we do not publish them, sell them, or use them to work out what to send you.
If you want somebody else to be able to read the record later, you have to tell them it exists. That is deliberate.
Whoever you have told can read it, because you showed them or wrote down how.
We do not contact anyone on your behalf, we are not told when somebody dies, and we act on nothing automatically. There is no nominated-contact email waiting to be triggered.
Yes. You can export the whole record as a file and keep it wherever you keep everything else, and you can delete it outright.
Export it at least once. A record that only exists on one company’s servers is one company away from not existing.
The questions where the answer is no, gathered rather than scattered.
No. Nothing you write in a tree record has legal force, and it does not replace or amend a will.
If you want your wishes to bind anybody, they belong in a will. The government explains what one needs at gov.uk/make-will.
We do not handle ashes and do not arrange anything to do with them. Scattering or burying ashes needs permission and proper guidance, and ashes can harm a young tree if they go in badly.
Your record can say what you would like. Arranging it is for the people who come after, with the right advice.
We do not claim that and we do not print a figure. One tree in one garden, over a life we cannot predict, is not something anybody can measure honestly on a product page.
A tree is a good thing to plant. It is not an accounting instrument.
We do not promise that. An oak can live for centuries in the right place, and a sapling can die in its first winter in the wrong one.
What we can say is that a tree planted now has more time than one planted later.
Not yet. We are new, and we would rather say so than buy or invent any.
When there are real ones, they will appear with the name of the person who wrote them and no editing beyond length.
